The Mentor scheme

The Mentor scheme is a free tutoring service whereby students usually from a non-English speaking are matched with university tutors.  The Learning Mentor helps the student with literacy, numeracy and other work.  Tutoring occurs on a one-to-one basis, at occurs at the schools, or an agreed upon location. Students and tutors are matched based on primary needs of the student and the time availability of the university tutor. This exciting scheme provides both the student and the Learning Mentor with a whole range of new skills as well as a new friend.  Embrace Education provides Learning Mentors with support and access to resources.

Tutoring Support Network

The Tutoring Support Network is a homework support group for primary and secondary aged children, often from non English speaking backgrounds.  Embrace Education offers a 1-2 hour classroom-based session after school every week for schools in the Clayton area. About 6-9 tutors work together to help out the students.

The primary aim of this program is to facilitate an environment which allows children to receive help with homework projects and further the child’s academic progress while providing positive role models for participants.  Volunteers help students with literacy, numeracy and other work that any students bring to the network.  The Tutoring Support Network provides assistance with daily homework and reading, but also helps to build other important skills such as learning how to be organised and present work projects, as well as promoting good interaction and communication.
