About STEW

Students Teaching English to Women (STEW) envisions to empower women through education. STEW is a proud programme by Embrace Education. STEW is committed to reaching out and supporting migrant and refugee women throughout Victoria. STEW aims to make significant and measurable progress for the women by inspiring student volunteers to work with migrant and refugee women around their university’s area.

STEW provides free one-on-one English tutoring to refugees and migrants- with a particular focus on women. We work in collaboration with AMES (Adult Multicultural Education Services) who provides us with clients to tutor and training for our volunteers. The majority of our clients are Afghani or Iraqi women. Our club is unique because we directly connect university students to the community. We encourage students to use their education to empower others, who we believe in turn will impact their community.

How can you help?

Our volunteer training session is over for 2008, but please stay tuned for new sessions in 2009! STEW continues to encourage a greater awareness of migrant and refugee issues on campus and we will be holding our Inaugural Fundraiser Movie Night on 18 August 2008, which will feature a documentary highlighting the struggles and hurdles refugees face when settling into Australia.

It will held in L4, Law Basement and starts at 6pm. Nibbles, drinks and a Nandos dinner will be provided on the night. It will cost $5 (members/Culture Card holders) or $7 (non-members/non-Culture Card holders). All the money raised will go towards building our library and resource centre for our volunteers. Please come and support us for a fantastic cause! You can buy tickets on the night or contact Meryl (Events Officer) on meryl_l[at]hotmail.com.
