Reflections Welcome to the Reflections page. Here you will find out what a few of our tutors, students and other stakeholders have to say about their experience with Embrace.
Tutor reflections: Being able to help students and knowing that you've made a difference has been a great experience – it has helped me to realise that teaching is something that I am passionate about! -MELISSA Today I went to local high school to tutor children. It turned out to be one of the most amazing experiences for me. I really felt as though I made a difference. The children there were in great need of help and assistance. Some of them have been through a fair deal, and struggled adapting to the schooling system here in Australia. The young Sudanese boy that I helped with his homework and reading was one of the sweetest kids that I have ever met. He was very shy, but extremely bright. The English barrier was something that greatly limited his progress at school. By assisting him, I was able to help him overcome the barrier. I urge everyone to come and help. You will find it is not only a great experience for you, but very important for the children as well. -TULSI My student has been a delight! She is so studious and very polite. She has an excellent work ethic and I really hope she is rewarded for it with her end of year marks -ALICE I have found the tutoring program, which is done through Embrace Education, to be an excellent way in helping the community. All the students are keen to improve their learning abilities and they really appreciate the help and guidance we try to provide. The most rewarding aspect of my brief experience tutoring refugee and children from disadvantaged backgrounds is knowing that you are improving their lives and increasing their ability to further their education and, consequently, helping them to achieve their dreams. My student tells me she feels she has improved a lot, so that gives me a good indication that I’m making some difference! I’m so glad that I met my student; she’s absolutely gorgeous and a heap of fun too! -ROMY Being an Arts/Education student, I really wanted to get involved with any volunteering program involving teaching. I really enjoy teaching whoever really and teaching English seemed like a really fun thing to do. I have been involved in the teaching project for around two weeks now and have actually been tutoring a lot of children in Maths as well as English. What a lot of people don’t understand is that the high school curriculum, even Maths Methods 1,2,3+4 occurs in a very heavy English structured course. This is why I want more people to come into our program! A lot of these students really want to do well, but without Monash students as resources, many of them will not. I hope that I can see a whole new variety of tutors coming along to lend us a hand.
Student/Stakeholder reflections: We are a poor school trying to do the best for our students, while disappointingly funded, and incredibly short of resources. This incredible program is making a significant difference to the educational and life chances of our senior students, and has become an invaluable resource for us. They continually amaze us with offers of in class tutoring support, computers for students and even grant money to assist us in buying books and equipment for newly arrived refugee students. The opportunities being offered by Embrace are beyond our wildest dreams. -ADRIENNE KOSS: (Springvale Secondary College 2007)
