A day out in the Wild with tutors and students
Individual Tutoring and Mentoring:
This program is aimed at providing a disadvantaged high-school student with a University student tutor and mentor. Tutors are matched to a student based on their subject range, suitability and location. If a student needs help with, for example English and Biology, then we do our best to find them a tutor who is able to help in these areas.
Individual Tutoring is directed towards VCE level students, however we do provide assistance to some year 10 students who have not been in Australia very long and need a lot of work to bring their English up to scratch before VCE. We get student referrals from a range of sources such as schools, parents and other organisations. A Student Referral Form is available from the Contact Us page.
Tutors and students then meet regularly at a local public library in an on-going relationship. Therefore volunteers have the chance to develop a relationship with their student and follow their student's growth and progress over time.
Tutoring can occur in either a One-on-one or Two-on-Two environment. One-on-one involves a tutor being matched to an individual student. However if the tutor has a friend who would also like to tutor a student, then it may be possible to set them up for Two-on-two tutoring. Here 2 tutors and 2 students (who are usually also friends) are matched up to meet regularly for group tutoring sessions.
It is up to tutors and students to arrange regular tutoring sessions at a library such as Springvale or Dandenong Public Library. Tutors can meet with their student anytime during the library's operating hours. Tutors then provide regular feeback to their Tutor Manager to allow Embrace to follow the progress being made.
Homework Clubs:
The Homework Clubs involve a carpool of tutors leaving Monash University in Clayton and travelling to a local high school. Students are then able to stay behind after class to receive free tutoring.
The carpool leaves Monash at roughly 2:50pm, depending on the location of the school. We set up in a designated classroom or the school library, and await students to arrive when school finishes at 3:15pm. The Club then runs until about 4:30pm. Each Homework Club runs once a week.
Volunteers assist with literacy, numeracy and whatever else the students need help with on a given night. Students come from a range of year levels from Yr 7 right through to Yr 12. There is no restriction on which students turn up for the Club, hence they are targeted at generally disadvantaged schools. Through the Homework Clubs tutors also provide assistance with daily homework and reading, and help to build other important skills such as English, organisation and communication.
The Homework Clubs at Springvale Secondary, Cleeland Secondary and Carwatha Secondary have now finished up for 2008. In Semester 1, 2009 we are looking to also start a Club at Heatherhill Secondary College.
Homework Club Meeting Place at Monash University, Clayton. This is where volunteers meet in order to carpool to a session.
In-School Assistance:
Here tutors assist in a particular classroom at one of our schools during school hours. This program is primarily aimed at young high school students in Yr 7, 8 or 9.
We can usually find a place for a volunteer if you have a few hours free during the day. Tutors can express a preference for a SOSE, English or Maths class.
Where possible we try to pair volunteers up when matching them for In- School Tutoring. This way two tutors can carpool together. Having someone else there can also make the first few sessions less daunting.
Great for education students looking for classroom experience!
